In the war of political opinion, Obama is playing hard ball. He's fighting for his political life. As the polls decline even further, he rises to the occasion by firing his lead General in the Afghanistan War. He accepted General McChrystal's resignation and instead of lecturing him and forgiving his indiscretion, he accepts and fires him. And immediately replaces him with General Petreus.
Obama was forced into a corner by McChrystal's behavior, by his disagreeing with the Commander in Chief in print. And as the pundits have observed, He had no choice but to let the good general go.
But what was McChrystal thinking? To be so open with a hack reporter, so openly pro-leftist, without the usual "off the record" in place, of course, the reporter was going to print what he said. Bad judgment all around. And so, the General is gone. And in many ways, this may be a good move for him. He's been there for 9 years. Now he can move on with his life and put the war behind him.
General Petreus has been named to succeed as Chief Commander in this lengthy war. While this is the longest war the American people have ever been engaged in, let's not forget how we ended up there. And that reason, is still at large. Perhaps the military has given up hope of ever capturing Bin Laden or maybe he's already dead. Now, the man once ridiculed by the left as "General Betray Us" is promoted to carry on the campaign. With Obama calling the shots and promising to pull out the military by June, 2011, aren't his hands tied militarily? Is it Vietnam all over again? Can we win or will the political leaders of our country play the same seesaw battle that prevented Vietnam from becoming a victory?
Only time will tell. But, truth be told, Obama will not tolerate what he considers to be insubordination. It's his way or the highway as General McChrystal found out. To disagree with Obama is tantamount to treason. We'll see if General Petreus fares any better under Obama's tutleage.
Fighting to keep the Afghan's free of the Taliban's diabolic rule, is a noble effort, but the military must be allowed to do their jobs. So far, I don't see any sign of Obama letting that happen.
