Michael Steele: Should He Stay or Go

Words spill out often before we can stop them. Before we think what they mean or who they will impact. Michael Steele's statements about the Afghanistan War were inappropriate to say the least. In saying that this war couldn't be won does a disservice to the men and women in uniform who are fighting to win. No soldier wants to hear that he's fighting for a lost cause.
Quickly thoughts of Vietnam jump into our heads. Nine years later and still fighting how can we not think of the quagmire of Vietnam? But to say to these brave young men and women that they are wasting their time; fighting a battle that will never be won is a ridiculous thing to say. Vietnam was a political war; and we now have a leader in place who won't let that happen, General Petreus. If those in power try to manipulate him, he will likely follow General McChrystal into retirement.
Many people are calling for Steele to step down as chairman of the Republican Party. He has a few advocates who are standing up for him, but the rancor in the party is growing. Can the Republicans afford to keep him as the election time is edging closer?
Can the Republicans survive the negative impact that Steele's comments could have on them? John McCain was interviewed and was quick to announce he was a "Reagan republican." Obviously an attempt to win votes away from his competition, J. D. Hayworth, as their primary grows closer. No one is fooled by such ploys.
Can we forgive the negative comments and gaffes from the chairman any easier than we do the gaffes of Joe Biden? Excuses are made continually by the behavior of the Vice President while Michael Steele is being hung out to dry.
I don't excuse these remarks, but are they any worse than "big f------ deal"? If I thought for one minute that one soldier would be placed in harm's way by his remarks, I would be the first one to demand he step down.
The fact that he put his foot in his mouth is pretty much standard operating procedure for the administration we have. It's happened early enough in the election season to be gone and forgotten by the time November rolls around. Of course, if the Obama run media has anything to do with it, they will continually bring this gaffe up to denigrate the Republicans.
It all comes down to the good of the party. Should he step down for the good of the GOP? If he doesn't and the party holds together and Republicans win big in November, this will all be forgotten. If the Democrats get back in, then, indeed, it will prove to have been a big _________deal.~ One Voice
